Now that Exchange Team has released the updated xml files to include 2008 R2 as a possible domain controller for Exchange 2007 SP2, some are confused as to what it means and questions are raised in various forums. Let me get this straight.
- Exchange 2007 SP2 will support 2008 R2 DCs in your network, even in a pure 2008 R2 domain.
- You can’t install Exchange 2007 SP2 on a 2008 R2 member server even with the new xml files.
- The server on which exchange gets installed has to be Windows 2008.
- It means that you cannot have exchange 2007 on a Windows 2008 R2 DC (single server scenario) for the time being, which is a huge blow for small businesses.
- Most hardware vendors have started shipping 2008 R2 as the base operating system & small companies should be careful, if you intend to run an exchange environment on the same server.
If you try to run the 2007 SP2 setup on a 2008 R2 server, the setup clearly specifies that it is not supported.
